Acupuncture and Naturopathy for Preconception Care.

Last Updated on 9 June 2024 by Brisbane Livewell Clinic

Congratulations on your exciting decision to have a baby! Pre-Conception Care is the next step. Whether you have been trying for a while or have just decided to start trying, our Acupuncturists and Naturopaths are here to support you through your pregnancy journey right from the beginning.

Pre-conception care has a significant place in pregnancy. For both males and females, ensuring optimal health before conceiving gives your child the best start to life before they enter the world!

Studies suggest the nutrient status and toxin exposure of both parents at conception can alter genetic expression in offspring via both sperm(1) and the egg. This makes Pre-conception care important for both parties as these factors can affect the health outcomes of the child, including the risk of major health conditions from birth through to adulthood(1).

Both male and female Pre-conception care is recommended to start a minimum of 3 months before conception to optimise the health of both the sperm and egg before conceiving. Acupuncture can help both parties optimise fertility by regulating hormones, reproductive function and emotional state(2). Naturopathy can support your nutritional status through diet as well as a prescription covering all aspects of health to ensure all required nutrients for a healthy conception are available at the time of conception along with regulating hormones and optimising reproductive function(3).

Throughout pregnancy, Acupuncture can help to reduce morning sickness and nausea(5) in early pregnancy, and reduce back/pelvic pain(6) and gastrointestinal complaints into the second and third trimester.  From 38 weeks, we can support your birth preparations with Acupuncture to help ripen the cervix and reduce body pain and anxiety(4).

Naturopathy throughout the pregnancy can help assist (but is not limited to) with symptom management through supplementation, dietary and lifestyle suggestions(3). Common symptoms such as ‘baby brain’, reflux, muscle cramps or congestion can be managed, along with optimising the mothers nutritional status to ensure the growing baby is getting all their nutritional requirements during these essential stages(3).

By combining Naturopathy and Acupuncture during pre-conception and pregnancy, you will support multiple aspects of yours and your babies health for a successful pregnancy.

For this reason, we are now offering pre-conception care and pregnancy-specific appointments for your first consult with a Naturopath and Acupuncturist to help get you started.
