Acupuncture, Cupping, Scraping & Everything Else You Need To Know About Chinese Medicine

Last Updated on 30 December 2020 by Brisbane Livewell Clinic

The Chinese have always had unique approaches to most things in life, and Chinese Medicine is no different. Chinese Medicine contains a variety of holistic healing techniques that consist of alleviating pain and reducing inflammation by engaging pressure points of the body from the outside rather than taking oral medication.

Chinese Medicine has been around for thousands of years and is still being used due to its many benefits. It’s proven to be a safe and helpful way to treat all types of issues, and because of its numerous benefits, it’s been embraced by the rest of the world too.

Let’s take a look at some of the most common healing techniques in Chinese Medicine:

Acupuncture

Who would have thought intentionally poking needles into your body can actually help you get rid of the pain? The Chinese discovered 2000 Acupuncture points in our body many years ago. These Acupuncture points are connected to 12 meridians. These meridians are supposed to conduct energy known as “Qi” between the surface of the body and our internal organs. Acupuncture seeks to restore the body’s internal balance by allowing the smooth flow of energy.

Acupuncture can be used to treat everything from muscle pain, back/neck pain, allergies, digestive problems and even depression. The healing technique is completely safe but make sure you go to an experienced Acupuncturist who uses sterile needles and knows what they are doing.

Cupping/Scraping

The purpose of cupping is the same as a massage; it helps loosen muscles, increase the flow of blood and calm the nervous system. It’s a big part of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

It involves the placing of glass or plastic “cups” onto tight parts of the body. The cups are warmed using a cotton ball or other flammable substances to remove the oxygen from inside the cup. As the air inside the cup cools, it creates low pressure in the cup, causing it to stick to the skin.

Scraping is also used to relieve tight muscles and relax the body. In scraping a piece of smooth jade, bone, animal parts (tusks, horns) or smooth surfaced rocks are scraped against tensed portions of the body to remove obstructions and build-up of toxins. Inflamed portions of the body will be scraped until red spots or bruises emerge in the area.
