Small Steps Towards Recovering from Depression

Last Updated on 7 March 2024 by Brisbane Livewell Clinic

Dealing with Depression is draining, making it difficult to take steps for self-recovery. This is what makes dealing with it a difficult task. You can’t simply snap out of it. It takes effort and hard work. But there is a lot you can do to fight this condition that afflicts millions of people on a global scale. Instead of worrying about overcoming the disorder all at once, take positive steps to feel better about yourself.

Recovery from Dealing with Depression is going to take its time.

Maintain connections

It’s tempting to isolate yourself. There is no reason to be embarrassed or guilty for feeling this way. Depression is a mental health disorder and can occur to anyone. Social support is imperative. Speaking with your friends and family about how you feel is the very first step towards recovery. Until you reach out to these people, you won’t realise how strong a support system you have.

Exercise it out

Exercise can release hormones that give out a feeling of pleasure. Some days, you struggle to even get out of the bed. This is because depression can result in extreme fatigue and an unwillingness to do anything physically. However, exercise can help remove some of this fatigue. Choose rhythmic exercise; it will help you focus better. Besides, it will enhance positivity within you.

Do “feel good” things.

Exercise is not the only thing you can do to feel positive. Do you like reading poetry, listening to music, or smelling flowers in the morning? Then do more of what makes you feel good. If you like pets, bring home a companion. Start your morning by taking them out for a walk. Try to stay for some time in a park or similar places with greenery. It will revitalize you.

Follow a healthy diet.

Your mental health is very much connected to your physical health. A diet rich in essential nutrients such as fibres and vitamins will keep your body fit. Minimize your carbohydrate intake by cutting down on sugar, baked items and fries. These can be comforting for a while, but crash your energy quickly. Instead, go for salads, and citrus fruits with high vitamin B. Deficiency of folic acid and B-12 can enable depression.

Challenge Negativity

Just telling yourself not to be negative doesn’t work. Set small goals. Depression often makes you feel powerless; however, setting small goals and accomplishing them can lift your mood. It can be as simple as keeping a diary. Make an entry every day and see how good it feels. It will also help you reflect on your recovery process and future expectations.

Easier said than done? Our Certified Naturopaths can help design an individualised program for you to help you deal with Depression. We have a holistic approach for treating mental health disorders and believe a healthy diet can make a lot of difference.
