Introduction to Our Pregnancy Massage Team

Last Updated on 9 June 2024 by Brisbane Livewell Clinic

Pregnancy is the number one time in a woman’s life to prioritise wellbeing and Pregnancy Massage is one of many ways to step up self-care and seek care from others. We chat to the Brisbane Livewell Clinic team of Masseuses, Fiona, Jules and Kelly, to discuss all things pregnancy massage.

Massage is the most common alternative therapy recommended during pregnancy (1) and over one-third of Australian women seek the services of a massage therapist for pregnancy-related health conditions. (2) As Jules puts it: “Pregnancy is a state of wellness and will at times challenge your body – either from a pre-existing condition or from changes occurring in each trimester.”

Massage helps to address physical complaints, support mental wellbeing and perhaps most significantly, can help with better birth outcomes. Kelly explains: “For Mum and bub to thrive through the stages of pregnancy, physical and psychological health care is a must.” Fiona echoes this sentiment: “Pregnancy massage is incredibly beneficial both physically and emotionally.” And science agrees with them.

Better Birth Outcomes
The positive effects on the health of the infant and mother have been shown in several studies. Massage by a practitioner or by birthing partners can help to reduce prenatal depression and increases gestational age and birth weight. (3) Other findings include fewer complications during labour and postnatally, like prematurity. (4) One study also found women receiving massage therapy experienced significantly less labour pain, with labour on average 3 hours shorter and with less need for medication. (1) Looking after those aching hips have never sounded more beneficial.

Supporting the Pregnant Body

Massage effectively addresses leg and back pain and muscle cramps. (1)(5) The right techniques are vital not only for safety but effectiveness as well. Jules finds that direct myofascial release is a great choice for expectant mothers. “It really helps to assist the body to structurally integrate the biomechanics via the neural pathway, creating a deep sense of ease and relief in the body.” She describes it as a “next-level massage.” The goals of her treatment are to improve overall movement, circulation and sleep, all being vital aspects of well-being in pregnancy.

In order to be effective, moderate pressure should be applied, perceived as pleasant and non-painful. (5) Kelly shares some insight: “Although not a deep tissue treatment, delivery of pregnancy massage by trained professionals can bring the same benefits as a remedial treatment. The use of specific suitable oils and techniques such as Lymphatic Drainage and Swedish massage, all support the Mum-to-be in achieving her desired treatment goals.”

Peaceful Mind, Peaceful Pregnancy
Relaxation and mental rest can make for a much more peaceful pregnancy, with studies showing massage is effective in addressing stress, anxiety, depression, sleep disturbances and headaches. (1)(5) An added bonus is that research indicates regular massage also has a positive effect on the immune system. (5)

Creating a sacred space for the massage recipient is important to our practitioners. Fiona observes: “when pregnancy massages are performed in a side-lying position (completely supported by pillows), women tend to feel comfortable and nurtured throughout the treatment.”

In safe hands

In terms of safety, Fiona explains, “side-lying is safe from the first trimester until your baby is born.” Many of her clients continue to see her in the postnatal period and get the hands-on support they need while adjusting to life with an infant. “Some clients even prefer side-lying after the birth of their baby, especially when breastfeeding,” she says.

A pregnancy massage is the perfect way for a woman to rest, nest and feel their best. Our qualified and experienced team relish the chance to share their knowledge and skills, contributing to a wonderful experience of pregnancy, birth and beyond.
